Heidi Sensenig at Studio 205

In my current work, I move between clay, acrylics, and texture-building media , finding inspiration from the natural world as well as my own inner landscape. I enjoy working with clay, following the give and take of the material to create both functional and sculptural works that flow between rough and smooth. I like to find the balance of control and letting go that I believe is essential in art and in life.

My acrylic work serves as a more brazen and immediate method of expression. My process often begins with an intuitive layer of paint, which then guides the next layers, building until the intention of the piece emerges, and ends with the editing phase. I enjoy adding hand-sculpted air dry clay to some of my pieces to expand the sensory-level impact.

I come from a long line of Mennonite makers. I am proud of this heritage and am interested in weaving this history into my own developing work. I have been a life-long artist, at times in the margins, as I pursued a career in occupational therapy and visual rehabilitation optometry.

Through my art practice, I seek to share the truth and connections in nature, the internal human experience, and the concept of home. I create art in order to express and heal myself, take risks, learn, grow, and connect to community.
